STLF Leadership: The Core Model
What is a CORE?
A Core is a group of 3 to 5 people that work together to accomplish an identified mission. The entire organization runs on the use of cores based on functionality instead of hierarchy.
Core Model Works Because of Trust and Equality
Cores exist for multiple functions—the National Core is in place to serve Chapter Cores, while Chapter Cores’ missions vary from campus to campus. Event Cores work to organize events, and Bus Cores’ purpose revolves around College Pay it Forward Tour planning.
There is complete equality among Cores, developing through relationships and roundtable discussion, ultimately building trust among the group. Often, core members shift towards a certain emphasis, allowing individuals to work from strengths and preferences.
Cores accomplish all of the necessary tasks to run an effective organization, without title or hierarchy, minimizing the gap among people and levels.
Cores Succeed Through Support and Respect
Very few accomplishments in life are done completely alone. STLF’s Core Model thrives due to the support of countless people, organizations, and ideas. Reading from bottom to top, the community supports people who support chapters who supports National. At the same time, National supports chapters who support people and so on.
We are all in this together– no one more or less important than anyone else. All circles need each other. The Core Model is effective through respect and communication among all circles of involvement.

Mission-specific Cores define roles and responsibilities
Each Core has an identified mission that reflects its responsibilities. Ultimately, we are all working towards the same STLF mission; however, as an effective means of achieving this mission while building valuable relationships and leadership qualities along the way, Cores have defined, specialized missions.
- National Core:
- To serve Chapter Cores with training, guidance, and support, through conferences, meetings, retreats, materials, databases, and more.
- To organize the overall process of the Pay it Forward Tour, while providing resource, support, and training to the Bus Cores and Celebration City Cores.
- To plan, staff, and execute High School Leadership Camp.
- To facilitate, train, organize, and execute the High School Pay it Forward Tour Program, upholding communication among high school administration, its students, college-aged leaders, and adult mentors.
- Chapter Core:
- To organize the Pay it Forward Tour, to execute other events, and to build campus support of leadership and of STLF.
- To support Bus Cores and Event Cores, relative to each core’s responsibilities.
- To plan and secure the longevity of the chapter through regular meetings, programming, effective Core transitions, and high attendance of STLF events.
- Event Core:
- To plan, market, recruit, and execute the specific event, while maintaining the roundtable approach and hopefully working with other organizations.
- Celebration City Core:
- To work as a support for both National and Bus Cores throughout PIF planning.
- To aid in conference and retreat planning, facilitation, and follow-up.
- To organize and execute PIF celebration and connection cities.
- PIF Tour Bus Core:
- To organize and plan the Tour: projects, housing, meals, and programming.
- To facilitate the bus and its participants during the Tour
