Pay it Forward Tour is the heart of STLF.
What is ‘paying it forward’ anyway?
If you help someone out, often they are asked to pay back whatever it is at some point. With this concept, you pay it forward, allowing the goodness to spread onward to more people. The idea is to help others, and then they pay it forward and help more people. This way, kindness never stops!
What is the Pay it Forward Tour?
The PIF Tour drives STLF on all levels—college, high school, and middle school levels. The Tour is a community service road trip that travels from city to city doing different service projects. Students on a charter bus will visit cities of various sizes and social issues, with the hopes of learning more about themselves and the world. There are three main components to an STLF PIF Tour:
- Reflection – Every night on the Tour ends with activities. In the beginning, they are ice breakers and get-to-know-yous. As the trip progresses, these activities provide a safe space for students to look deeper within themselves, exploring how these issues affect them personally.
- Education – STLF PIF Tours provide a binder with information on the Tours, educating people on the social issue and the realities of the communities they stop in. It is important to know how these issues affect different cities as well as students’ hometowns.
- Action – Students are also exposed to different cities, diverse people, and a wide range of issues. They serve in each city, meet community members, and learn about what affects other people. Most importantly, they take what they learn and commit to action within themselves, in their lives, and with their communities.
2006-07 Tour served over six years for one full-time person.
In short, the PIF Tour was a success. During the 2006-2007 year, 800 participants went on Tours, visiting 100 communities, and serving nearly 12,500 hours. These hours translate to one full time person working over 6 years. There were 22 Tours total--15 college buses and 7 high school buses.
