STLF Uses Same PIF Tour Components for Middle School Students
STLF expands its programming to the Middle School level by creating a 3-day experience that include all components of the Pay it Forward Tour— service, education, and reflection. Community members and school representatives are encouraged to take part in the Tour, and college student leaders in STLF will organize and facilitate the program.
There have been three Middle School PIF Tours to date, both working with students from Carl Ben Eielsen and Discovery Middle Schools in the Fargo School District. From February 27 - March 1, 2009, students from West Fargo Cheney Middle School will take part in their first Pay It Forward Tour. Students from any middle school are welcome to register for the program.
Middle School Tour possesses dynamic components.
This Pay it Forward Tour is 3 days, and fits the needs and desires of the schools. Buses leave from one school and travel to 2 different cities—serving 3 unique projects. The last city is the celebration city, or the Tour’s end destination of Minneapolis. In addition to the travel and service, students also take part in evening reflection and leadership activities to learn more about the issue we worked with that day, and how to come back together to take action and make a difference in their own community. A standard day includes the following:
- Service Project in the Morning
- Lunch with the Community Served
- Enrichment Experience
- Bus Travel in the Afternoon to Next City
- Dinner and Potential Tourism in City
- Evening Activities and Reflection
- Spend the Night (participants sleep in gyms, community centers, churches, etc)
Projecting 5 buses in the 2008-2009 school year.
This year’s Middle School Tour growth is exciting, as more students from more places will have the experience of a Tour! The Middle School Pay It Forward Tour program started just in September, 2007, and now will involve approximately 175 students on five Tours in the current school year

In moving forward, STLF is exploring what is the best for for STLF with this age bracket. STLF very much believes in the power of youth and in the power of collaboration. The organization will move forward and position itself in what is best for the whole.
Regardless of what happens, STLF is proud of these students and we are excited to see what these bright young minds accomplish!
